The Sveriges Television dilemma
Cathedral or marketplace? | SVT finds itself in a period of change. The idea of public service television as a cathedral of particular values has been replaced by the round-the-clock, pursuit of all viewers. It appears to be a sign of the times that programmes are being produced in which no one at the outset knows what they amount to.
The BBC model
An imperfect beauty | The British Broadcasting Corporation may, in some sense, be bigger than Britain itself-exporting values of impartiality, objectivity, and public service. Those values are now fighting for survival. The BBC will never be perfect, but its core aspirations must be defended.
A state education
Service and control | Historically, those in power have always been interested in educating and controlling the citizenry. Public service was a concept that developed only with the emergence of the modern nation state, and before communications technologies proliferated. It was a brief, passing moment in a much longer story.
