"What is civilization? I do not know. I cannot define it in abstract terms. But I think I would recognise it when I see it ...". So began the art historian Kenneth Clark's BBC series Civilisation from the late 1960s. There are probably many that share Clark's view, that civilization is best defined a roundabout way - through the cultural expression that seems to capture the core of civilisation.
